What is Montessori Education?

Maria Montessori (1870-1952) was the first female physician in Italy. She developed an educational philosophy which we know as Montessori Education. Montessori is child centered education, in that the curriculum is designed so that a child can progress at his or her own pace through the use of hands on experiences. Focus is placed on intrinsic motivation over external rewards or punishments. Independence is a value, and the children learn to care for themselves and their environment. While there is a structure to follow, the child is given latitude to pursue his or her own interests, while the guide (teacher or parent) keeps future goals in mind and works with the child towards these goals. Many Montessori programs include a nature component, so it's a good fit for my Farm School program, but a farm is by no means necessary.

Do I need to spend a fortune on materials?

Montessori developed many valuable learning materials which you will find in a Montessori classroom, however, the heart of Montessori is the philosophy, not the materials themselves. Some materials can be made at home, they won't be as durable as the ones purchased for a classroom, but will be fine for one or two kids. Others are worth purchasing, and I can direct you to affordable sources. You likely will not be spending any more on materials than you would on any other homeschooling curriculum.

What will Montessori look like in my home?

Whether or not you choose Montessori, it is a good idea to create a space dedicated to homeschooling. This doesn't need to be an entire room, a corner is fine, but you will want to have child sized shelves and furniture, so that your child can access and return his or her own materials and work comfortably. I can walk you through setting up this environment.

What can I expect from a consultation?

Because in Montessori Education we design a program based on each individual child's needs I will start by asking you some questions about what your child knows in different areas. There are no "shoulds” in this process, whatever they know is great, we're just determining a starting place. Once I get a picture of where your child is I can walk you through the next steps in each area. This will determine the materials you will want in your environment. I can provide either links to purchase or photographs and instructions on how to make them. Many things can be adapted from things you probably already have in your house. This initial consultation will probably take a couple hours and will cost $50. You may or may not want more support after that. I will be available for questions via email, or you may wish to schedule another call or video conference at a rate of $25/hr. If you wish to contact me for an appointment, or simply to ask further questions about what an appointment would entail please email me by clicking the button below.
